Al Dicker, creator of the exclusive Dicker Reading Method, launched his career as an educator in the New York City public schools system more than 35 years ago. As a special education teacher from 1961 to 1975, Dicker developed the Dicker Reading Method as a way to address the extraordinary iliteracy problem in the United States. He first experienced considerable success working with children with Down syndrome. When these children began to realize tremendous gains in their reading, advancing as far as the sixth grade level, Dicker asked himself, “If I can get a Down syndrome child to read on a 6th grade level, how come half of the country is illiterate?” Dicker decided his life’s purpose was to improve literacy for both children and adults.
Dicker realized that traditional methods of reading instruction were not working for his students, so he created a new method: the Dicker Reading Method. Amazingly, his students, many of whom had severe learning disabilities, suddenly began making rapid progress in their reading skills. From 1976 to 1988, Dicker served as a reading advisor for the New York City Board of Education and was asked to conduct seminars from New York to Los Angeles.
In 1989, Dicker retired from the New York City Board of Education to further expand his reading program, opening a private tutoring center in Scarsdale, NY. The Dicker Reading Method has helped over 10,000 students from Pre-School to 12th grade accomplish remarkable results. In 2008, Dicker was commissioned to teach English to Chinese studends in Guiyang, China. The Dicker Reading Method can teach any child to read, even students who have been diagnosed as learning disabled, dyslexic, or with ADD or ADHD, etc. Whether your child is reading above, below, or at grade level, he or she can accomplish 3 to 6 years of reading advancement in just 1 year with this program. Dicker and his program have received numerous endorsements, including those of CBS News and Family Circle magazine.
Al Dicker holds a B.S. in psychology from the University of Connecticut and a M.A. in education and special education from NYU.
The Dicker Reading Method works for everyone from pre-school through adult, from the educationally challenged through the gifted. Over 10,000 students have become proficient readers after participating in the program. The Dicker Reading Method will teach any child to read better, faster, with greater fluency, and comprehension in a fun, nurturing environment.
